Some guys are fine with grinding on a bench grinder, and do it very well. Make sure you only grind tungsten on that wheel though, to avoid contamination of your electrode. Any manual process will do fine with offhand ground tungstens. Just remember to grind a small flat on the tip, keep the taper around 2x electrode diameter, and keep it clean. If you do aluminum, the electrode choice and geometry will be influenced by your machine (inverter vs transformer/rectifier). I use 2% ceriated for everything on my inverter.

Green is pure tungsten and is the old school electrode for welding AC aluminum on transformer machines. It is not recommended for use with inverter based machines. I have a little of this stuff and hardly ever use it. The purple is E3 like Olivero mentioned. I have limited experience with it now and it seems to be pretty good.

Tungsten is a poor conductor 34% compared to copper 100%. Therefore, with tungsten in the circuit, there is more resistivity. Therefore, shortening the tungsten electrode, and increasing the copper, does help. Hence the copper cored spark plugs. In my tests, the spark was better when I replaced a big section of the tungsten rod with copper.

How to Sharpen Tungsten for TIG Welding in 6 Steps
Use a dedicated, tungsten-only grinder or sander. Grind parallel to the length of the rod, never across it. Hold the electrode to the grinder wheel at an angle of 22.5°. Taper back about 2/3 of the rod diameter and leave a flat spot about 2/3 of the rod diameter on the tip for the best arc. Wipe it clean with acetone.
