Set the ring into the cylinder, and use a piston to push it square to the bore. Measure the gap with a feeler gauge, and increase as necessary. You can always increase the gap, but you can not make it smaller! Measure, and re-measure. Then as you are grinding the ring gaps, you should aim to make the ring gap ends perfectly parallel.

The radial pressure of the ring tension is only used to START the sealing process, and cylinder pressure is what really pushes the ring outwards against the cylinder wall. Lol. Its really not as critical as many would have you believe. You can use a good set of files. Just try to cut them straight and flat across the gap. The thinking is, the added heat from big boost will make the rings expand more than a NA engine (or low boost engine) and that will cause the ring ends to meet and seize up the piston.

I measured ring gap at about .009", with a 85.5mm piston (3.4") I should have .013 to .014" of ring gap right? I will eventually be turbocharging the car but will be running NA and it sounds like you gap a little bigger when you run FI.

When you get that done, put the ring in the bore and make sure it fits concentrically, that there is contact around the full circumference. OS rings are formed for a larger bore and when pressed into a smaller bore may not fit as well. You may also encounter higher ring friction.

Get a new piston ring (not a used one). Insert ring into cylinder and position it about 1" down the bore. Measure the end gap with thickness gauges. Brand new spec (or re-bore with new ring) should have .008" to .014" gap (preferably closer to .008"). Add .003124" to gap for every .001 diametrical wear in the cylinder.

Filing the ring leaves a tiny burr on the end. It's hard to see but you can easily feel it with your fingers. This burr will prevent the rings from sealing properly. It has to be removed. Using a honing stone carefully smooth down the burr leaving a tiny chamfer on all edges.

To check this gap clean the carbon from the ends of the ring and then check it with feeler gauges. This gap may be in the region 0-178-0-50 mm governed by the diameter of the bore but it exceeds 1 mm per 100 mm of bore diameter, new rings must be fitted. Almost too tight to get the pistons in. So I took out my bore gauges and micrometer and did my 24 cylinder measurements. Also measured the piston skirts.
