This study assesses dust emission and dispersion from crushing in open-pit quarries. Measurements were conducted in six aggregate quarries, labelled from 1 to 6, where the crusher is assumed to be the most significant source of dust. Measurements were made under real operating conditions with optical measurement device.

Rock dust is a byproduct of the quarrying industry and results from rock crushing. In the industry it is known as blue metal, cracker or crusher dust. Landscapers use rock dust for filling holes, bedding paving stones and mixing with cement. More recently its applications have broadened to other areas and its true importance is becoming apparent.

Probably self compacting. #57, which is 1/2 to 3/4-inch gravel is generally considered to be self compacting. This is because there are no fines to inerfer with the movement, so it goes to where there is direct contact between the particles. Short of braking the rocks, which would require a great deal of force, the material won't get any tighter.

This momentary airflow reversal is induced by a short burst of compressed air similar to pulse-jet bag dust collectors. The compressed air is released from the storage receiver by a fast-acting, high-flow diaphragm valve. This pulse of air dislodges the accumulated dust from the element. The dust then dumps into the hopper or collector drawers.
